Security Settings/ActiveX Controls

I haven't 'Uninstalled & Reinstalled' internet explorer in ME yet because I'm
a little scared of the process. I don't know if I can get thru the
directions. I've worked a little more on the computer and have no problems
now with Word, Excel, or Office. The Shut Down problems have always existed
on this computer - sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn't. I'm
always shocked when it does worked.

I noticed that my internet explorer version is 5.50.4134.0100. I want to
install IE 6SP1, but I get the message "not all components installed
successfully. The following were not installed: IE6 Web Browser, Offline
Browsing Pack, Browser Customizations, Advanced Authoring." "Setup was unable
to install all of the components. Please call all applications and try
running setup again." Am I jumping too fast on getting this update or do you
think this update might help load Outlook Express? Right now IE is running
fine, but since the version messed up during the security/activex problem,
who knows what version OE may have? Thanks.

You seem to be doing fine - read my website, and feel free to either post
here, or email me direct (all public email addies actually work <but don't
tell anyone!>) if you have questions - I should be able to walk you through
it (I spent a solid weekend trying to get the site right on this - so with
luck it should work without my personal intervention - but....)

Instructions for this process are here

Ask if you need more - that's what I'm here for!

OK...as I understand...you now have no problems with the Office programs?
If that is correct, that is good progress. You are now back to square
one..or IE5.5.... with your IE browser and are now able to connect to the
Internet? However, you can not open OE and are unable to install the IE6
SP1? I'm not sure on this, and Mart and Noel are the experts here, but, you
will likely need to do a repair of the IE5.5 to make sure that all the
components are fully installed before you try to install the IE6 SP1. Wait
until Noel or Mart have a chance to check out where you are at this point,
and make the recommendations of what your next step(s) should be.

It sounds as if you have made some very good progress. Good job! <g>

Greetings...thanks Noel. The "Uninstalling and Reinstalling IE in ME" worked.
I finally found the courage today to calmly walk through the steps, and
everything seems to work fine now. However, (you probably knew there would be
a 'however' in this post) I can't find my old address book in Outlook
Express. I found all of the OE correspondence in C:\Windows\Application
Data\Identities\ using the extension ".dbx" Are these recoverable? If so, how
do I move them back to OE?

As always, I appreciate your help.

You can use the File | Import option in your current OE to get your messages
back - simply point the wizard at the directory and hit Go.

Your address book is usually easy enough to find - do a Search for files
named '*.wab' (without the quotes), and see what pops up - you can then use
the Import wizard again.
