Hi Jan, sorry for so long getting back. I was pretty certain that Noel would
respond as he did (as he does!!) and didn't want to overstate his potential
reaction for fear of pushing his blood pressure up - and thanks Joan, for
noting the same :-
<lol> That's an understatement if ever I saw one <g>
Joan

However, it will be nice to hear from mph170, whenever (s)he is ready, to
learn if progress has been made. Let's hope things have worked out ok.

BTW - can't remember if I sent my congrats, on you becoming MVP (on the
'other' closed group) - so if not, congrats!! Enjoy your Summit <g>

Thanks again for the responses. I do like a challenge, so I will set down
Monday morning and first start with the startup-A drive scenario. I will then
hopefully proceed to option 2, Cd-rom support to identify my drive letter. At
the A prompt, I will insert a data disk (can this be the recovery disk?) into
the Cd-rom, will type E: and then press return as I sing 'Anticipation.' At
the E prompt, I'll type DIR /P, press return, while singing the second verse.
Yep, I'll return to this group and give my 'exact' results.

Thanks Jan for your advise on the Me system. After pricing the new shiny
packages, I think a larger hard drive and what ever else is needed will work
fine with Win Pro. My tax software group requires Win Pro for 2006 so should
I just upgrade the Me, after it is working properly, or should I buy the
entire program and start fresh? It will be nice to be back in the 'reliable
computer' bookkeeping and income tax business again. I'll post again on
Monday. Thanks.

There's no reason - assuming you have a real, rather than Recovery, OS
disk - why you shouldn't do a reformat/reinstall using an Upgrade version of
XP
It will simply ask at the appropriate time for you to insert the CD for the
qualifying product.

One significant advantage of a reformat is that you can then be *sure* that
you got rid of the Norton dregs!<g>

The plan sounds good. I am glad you decided to see what can be done to
restore the system first. Do mind the crystal stemware on the high notes,
though. said:

Follow Noel's advice on the upgrade, as long as you have the necessary CD
for the qualifying application as he stated there should be no problem. If
not, then you'll need to buy the stand-alone version.

Have a great weekend and we'll check back on Monday. :)

Thanks, Mart! Still getting my feet wet, but, and things are very exciting.
I am really looking forward to my first Summit, and getting a chance to meet
all those who'll be attending in person. Are you going to be there as well?

Though a little blearly-eyed from all of this, I'm almost back in business.
I've got the Me system up now but I'm receiving the following errors:

(1) Outlook Express: a. Outlook Express could not be started. The
application was unable to open the OE message store. Your computer may be out
of memory or your disk is full. Contact MS Support for further assistance.
(0X80040154); b. Outlook Express could not be started because MSDE.DLL could
not be initiated. OE may not be installed correctly.

(2) Shut Down Problems Still Exist. Monitor shuts down, but system does not.
Monitor comes back on within 10 minutes with a striped orange/black screen.
You cannot contol-alt-del. I have to turn off the system manually.

(3) My Documents: I tried to open a document. error: This file does not have
a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an
association in the Folders Options control panel.

(4) Microsoft Word: error: Microsoft Word has not been installed for the
current user. Please run setup to install this application.

(5) Microsoft Excel: error: Excel has not been installed for the current
user. Please run setup to install the application.

(6) Microsoft Help and Support: error: The application is busy.

(7) MS Office XP Setup: I ran setup and checked to install all options. 14GB
available. error: Error 1919, Error configuring ODBC data source: MS Access
Database, ODBC error 13: Could not load the setup or translator library.
Verify that the file MS Access Database exists and that you can access it.
Quit installation.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/directdb.htm

Errors in DIRECTDB.DLL or MSOE.DLL generally indicate corruption in the
message store.
Start by moving Folders.dbx to an empty Windows folder (with OE closed).
Note: the DBX files are hidden in Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3. You will lose
your folder hierarchy and the lists of newsgroups on the news servers, but
it might get you into OE.

If that doesn't do it then move all of the DBX files to the same folder as
Folders.dbx (again with OE closed). You should now get into OE. Try
importing the messages from
the folder you moved the DBX files to. If you can't, you can use this tool
to extract the messages:

DBXtract ($5):
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/

Note: It can take a long time (days with really large folders).

The messages can then be dragged from the Windows folder back into a folder
in an open instance of OE.

Well, some headway at least <g> However - at first sight, your 'report'
suggests two possible scenarios (and I can't remember whether you did a
System Restore or a config /restore at some point).

1) - you restored back from a 'very early' date (possibly pre installation
of Office)
2) - You've lost some important files (possibly due to virus removal?)

Options?
- To save all your important data and clean install (start again) which
could save a lot of time!!
- Or, if you've plenty of time and are prepared to 'have-a-go', then try
and fix it <g>

See if you are able to select a more recent SR point - this *might* bring
things back - but depends how corrupted (lost files etc.,) your system is.

See if you can 'fix' IE and OE - Try Noel's site :-
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm

Regarding Office, you *may* need to uninstall it first - if you can - then
try a re-install. You *shouldn't lose data - but back-up anyway - see option
one.

But looking again at your interesting collection of error reports, the first
'option' might be the simplest.

Good luck

Mart

Hi mph170 :)
Though a little blearly-eyed from all of this, I'm almost back in
business.
I've got the Me system up now but I'm receiving the following errors:

I an well imagine you are! It is a good deal for the mind to deal with all
at once. <g> You have made good progress, at least your machine is talking
to you now and giving us good information as to what is going on. That is a
good start.
(1) Outlook Express: a. Outlook Express could not be started. The
application was unable to open the OE message store. Your computer may be
out
of memory or your disk is full. Contact MS Support for further assistance.
(0X80040154); b. Outlook Express could not be started because MSDE.DLL
could
not be initiated. OE may not be installed correctly.

Frank Saunders has this very well covered...let's see where you can go with
his instructions
(2) Shut Down Problems Still Exist. Monitor shuts down, but system does
not.
Monitor comes back on within 10 minutes with a striped orange/black
screen.
You cannot contol-alt-del. I have to turn off the system manually.

I'm not sure, but, you might try working in safe mode for now, which may
bypass some of the functions that are throwing so many errors and causing
some of the other problems.

Mart....Frank..what do you think on this? Would it make any difference?
(3) My Documents: I tried to open a document. error: This file does not
have
a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an
association in the Folders Options control panel.

Did you try this yet? If not, perhaps you need to reintroduce the programs
to the documents by resetting the associations. If you need help here post
back.

Ohh...my....how often I got that......irritaing for sure....but, not a worry
for now.
(7) MS Office XP Setup: I ran setup and checked to install all options.
14GB
available. error: Error 1919, Error configuring ODBC data source: MS
Access
Database, ODBC error 13: Could not load the setup or translator library.
Verify that the file MS Access Database exists and that you can access it.
Quit installation.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.
mph170

See what happens with the information you've got from Frank and Mart at this
point. They have a good handle on it, and you need to take it a step at a
time.

Hope this helps.
