Error: Current security settings prohibit running activex controls on this
page. My original desktop will not restore; security levels in Internet
Properties will not change. Cannot open my documents, my computer, ie, etc. I
thank you in advance for your help. Using Win Me

I have that too it wont let me update on windows update eithier, im not sure
if its a prob from my side like my modem settings or if its a virus .. any
help would be very much appericiated ive tryed everything on this site and
even some stuff on others im using mozilla to type this coz it wont allow me
into certain sites eithier. HELP!!!

You likely have a hijacker and/or malware on your system. In addition to
updating and running your AV, download, install and run the programs below
in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled. This will remove the nasty you
have and any others it may have let in the back door. Some malware can
replicate itself repeatedly if not removed properly, so even if you have run
some of the programs listed here, it is important that you run them again
according to the information below so that Windows is not operating to hide
any files 'in use' Follow all instructions carefully:

First, Clear the TIF's and empty the recycle bin:

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be
sure there are no lingering items on the system.

Thanks for the info Jan, but nothing worked. I can't enable Hidden Files;
can't open the recycle bin at all therefore can't empty it; since I can't get
online, I downloaded the cwshredder, buster, adaware, etc files to my other
computer, copied them to a cd, but the cdrom doesn't work either on the Win
Me - I still get the same error regarding security settings prohibit running
activex controls. I have an HP recovery disk and tried to boot up with it,
but again it is not recognized. Any other suggestions?

Hi mph170 :)

As you are unable to use the CDROM on your machine to load the scan and
removal tools to check your machine for scumware, or use the HP Recovery CD,
by this reply I am crossposting your post to the
microsoft.public.windowsme.general newsgroup, as I think you may need the
assistance of the WinME experts there as well. I also have WinME, and by my
own experiences I know that there are somethings that you should and should
not do, and/or should be done in specific steps. You don't mention if your
Windows is OEM or if you have the original install CD, and that can also
make a difference.

I am not sure at this point what to recommend, as I don't want to make
anything worse as you may still be able to recover the system. Hopefully,
the folks in the WinME group will be able to assist with this process.

Hang in there, we'll get you back up and running.... <g>

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here Noel (or Jan), but like you, I am
having a little trouble trying to absorb the saga. I'm not even too sure
whether the saga presented here is complete - or quite where to start.

However, amongst other things, the OP (mph170) appears to be having problems
with reading from - or even the recognising - the CD-ROM, and maybe that is
a good enough point to start to address the first of mph170's problems. The
first thing mph170 needs to do is to determine whether this is a WinMe issue
or not. The following ASS-U-MEs that there is the only CD-ROM on the PC.

First question - has anyone been 'under the bonnet' and disturbed any of the
wiring within the computer?

You must ensure that the PC does actually 'see' the CD-ROM. Its cables *may*
have become dislodged. Either look in the BIOS to see if it is recognised
there, or confirm that you can 'see' it in Real Mode DOS

To 'see' it in Real Mode DOS, Boot, using your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk
in the A: drive.
Select option 2. "Start computer with CD-ROM support."

Let the screen information scroll until you eventually see a line which
should report a drive letter for the CD-ROM - but note that it may not
necessarily the same letter as you would expect to see in Windows.

For example, you may see the CD-ROM, becoming the E:, so the screen should
show:
Drive E:= Driver MSCD001 UNIT 0
Your CD-ROM Is Drive E
Click to expand...

When the boot disk finally settles down, you will be presented with an A:\>
prompt.

Now put a (data) CD into the CD-ROM and at the A:\> prompt, type "E:" (no
quotes and note the colon after the letter E) Then Press Return.

Now, at the E:\> prompt, type "DIR /P" (no quotes and note the space) Then
press Return.

You should see a listing of the CD contents.

Come back with your results. Give EXACT errors reports - if any

- AND please restate any other issues (the original problem!) so that we
may try to determine whether an SR might yet be appropriate.

Hello Jan, Noel & Mart:

I only have one cd-rom on the HP Win Me and no one was 'under the bonnet.'
When I start ME, it recognizes the cd-rom and usually the first file on the
disk, but then I get the error message 'security settings..activex
controls..page will not open correctly.' Now when I start in the safemode, I
do not have the cd-rom but I can see all of my original files on c drive. I
tried the recovery disk again last night with the disk in the drive at
boot-time, but it would not start on its own nor could I open it manually
because of the error message. While in safemode I was able to look at
msconfig files, etc. I compared the files to my Win 98 2ed. Everything seemed
to be identical. I did have six files recorded as 'not present' in the system
summary/internet explorer. My 'start' button still will not work in either
selective or safemode.

To back up a little, I upgraded to Norton Security 2005 a couple of weeks
ago. I don't know if I put that in my first post or not. It installed ok and
it was current at the time this Me problem started. I checked the Norton help
files online with my other computer, identified the same error message on
their board, and according to their advise, unintalled Norton Security 2005
via safemode. I don't know if it uninstalled or not because my recycle bin
would not open in either safemode or selective mode. When I called Norton, of
course they said it was a windows problem. Later I looked through all the
files and could not find Norton, so guess it was deleted.

Today I networked Me to Win 98 and copied my clients accounting
files/programs. I didn't want to do this, but I didn't want to risk losing
this data. I know I should have a virus program running, but I don't know if
I want to reinstall Norton.

get. You guys in WinME know my history with ME, so that's why I thought it
best not to do anything more until you experts in ME had a chance to take a
look. I was worried that doing the wrong thing might ruin any chance he may
still have with an SR. :)

mph, although - from your reply - I now *suspect* that your CD-ROM is
*probably* going to be ok, I would still like you to check it according to
my previous response, if only for elimination purposes.

The reason that you can't see the CD-ROM in safe mode (unlike Win98 - IIRC)
is quite simply that the drivers are not loaded. Hence my previous
suggestion which loads DOS (Real Mode) drivers from the floppy. In WinMe,
the CD-ROM drivers are only loaded in Normal Mode.

For the moment, I'll leave it there, as I'm tied up on 'domestic chores'
(Saturday morning here <g>), however, I suspect Noel's reaction might be
'self-inflicted' when the he reads "WinMe and Norton" in the same sentence
<g> He will probably advise dumping Norton and concentrate on reclaiming a
decent machine!

If you haven't made further progress, I'll come back in a few hours -
probably your bed time, on that side of the pond?

I wasn't going to rant (too much)!! - honest!!!
But - since you insist<g>....

ANY Norton program will cause problems in Win ME sooner or later - usually
sooner. Norton have persisted in blaming ME for the problem, while
consistently demonstrating their lack of understanding of the OS, and their
complete indifference to the plight of their users.
DUMP ALL THINGS NORTON!
(that goes for the other Symantec Products, also!!)

Now - back to MPH170's problem....
I suspect that you do indeed have a hijacker on board somewhere, and that it
has decided what 'security' settings you need (which suit it - but not
necessarily you!)
It's quite possible that this hijacker is in fact Norton - if you installed
the full Security suite!

What can you actually do in Safe Mode?

Can you access the ActiveX Settings there?
Can you access and modify Folder Option there?



Back to Normal Mode - I'm a little unclear, still about exactly WHEN you get
the ActiveX error come up - is it as soon as Windows starts?, or when you
open a Web Page??

I'd disable Active Desktop as a starter, and see if that helps - Display
Properties|Web

After a few hours of sleep consisting of nightmares about Win Me and oops,
'Norton,' I've decided to dump the entire system and move forward. I sure
need to retrieve some additional files from Me though. Anyway, I looked at
new computers last night...My income tax software requires XP Pro for 2006,
but most new systems have XP Media. Since I have received so many expert
replies regarding Security Settings/ActiveX errors, what are your
recommendations on a new system? XP Media sure looks nice, but am I stepping
off into another hole here? If, oops, 'Norton' likes to attack little old
lady computers, what security program will safely do its thing and leave me
alone? I file returns electronically and need the best security I can get, so
who's the best?

Since I can't light a fuse 'under the bonnet' to send this computer into
orbit, I will continue to work on the attacked Me when I get a chance. The
error still occurs when I start the computer...I have a brand new desktop
that looks nice, but that's it. It's for 'show' only. I will try to start
with the Cd-rom support and see where it gets me.

Yes....Norton was not metioned at the beginning, so I didn't know about that
until now. It does put a different light into the mix....a black light as it
may be. However, not many users realize what most things Norton can do to
ME, or even any of the other OS's for that matter, but, especially ME.

I thought Noel handled it quite well.....although...I swear I heard that
familiar rapid foot tapping in the background... <g>

As you can see, the folks on ME are a bit vocal all things Norton, and
knowing that now does tend to explain several things. However, I wouldn't
be too quick to write off the system completely, as it is possible that you
can still redeem your system and have a good working machine, giving you
time to make whatever preparations necessary for your data to move to the
next step up. I'm going to leave the instructions regarding the process for
that up to the best hands there is for WinMe users, but, I think that your
problems will be much easier to resolve once Norton is totally off your
system. Then the cleaning and restoration process can be done more
efficiently.

I added a new, larger had drive to my machine when I moved up to W2k, and
again when I moved to XP Pro. I've kept my ME as a backup, and have had no
problems at all.

For my vote on the XP....I'll say XP Professional. But, it all depends on
what you need.
