Security issues while installing ActiveX control: registry permissions

F

Fran Varona

Hello from Spain.

I try to install an ActiveX control from a secure website. I set up IE
Security to permit installation of ActiveX controls. When I accept the
information message about the control, I get an error: "Your installation
requires write permission on Windows registry. Log on as a member of
Administrators group" (not exactly, because the message is in spanish). The
problem is that the user actually IS member of Administrators group. I try
again logging as the original 'Administrator' user, and I get the same
error. The OS is Windows 2000 Pro SP4, IE 6 SP1, version 6.0.2800.1106.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Fran :)
Hello from Spain.

Hello from Northern Virginia, USA! :)

You don't mention which version of Windows or IE you are using, so I'm
taking a guess here. Try the following and see if it helps:

Your current Security settings prohibit running ActiveX Controls

Set your Security to Med.
View the Browsers How-to regarding updating your browser security settings.
http://www.auburn.edu/oit/support/employees/browsers/ht_ie6_browser_mediumsecurity.php
and setting your browser to medium-level security

also..

Allow active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service
Pack 2:

Zone Err Msg Your Current Security Settings Prohibit Running ActiveX
Controls on This Page...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q223310/

and...

This happens if the Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins setting is disabled
for the My Computer Zone. Follow these steps to disable the restriction.

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT

Update your script engine: For 2000 and XP go to

I think that I did mention the version of Windows and IE... but anyway, my
problem finished in a peculiar way.

The problem was the ActiveX control, the one I was trying so hard to
install. It was hosted in a government's site, and I had to phone them
endlessly, and at the end they told me that the control actually had a
problem. While installing, you get an error message but there was no
connection between the message and the real problem.

Thanks a lot anyway.
