Security Center Service gets disabled automatically

For some reason I can't explain the Security Center service gets disabled and
with it the Windows update is turned off (altough the Automatic Update
service remains with status started). I go into the services admin tool, set
Security Center to automatic, press apply then start and then OK. Then I turn
on automatic downloads. When I check back a few minutes later the Security
Center is disabled again and the Windows automatic update is off. I'm going
nuts!. I have CA eTrust AV and Black Ice firewall. Also ran SpyBot, Ad-Aware
SE, Yahoo Anti-Spy and still have the problem.

check CA eTrust AV and Black Ice firewall settings to make sure they are not
overriding or even disabling the Windows Security Center settings. you can
check their respective event logs to view recently blocked applications and
port access. Also, make sure you are logged in as administrator.

Checked both. Black Ice doesn't show anything. eTrust AV shows 3 Trojan
viruses removed. It is performing the weekly scan now. Also started to run
Panda's Active Scan software. We'll see what happens

Panda Active scan removed two more viruses. I turned the settings back on and
the problem is GONE!. Evidently malware was the cause.
