Security Center disabled

Hi, I was looking at the Services on my laptop and noticed that the Security
Center was disabled. I went to Control Panel-Security Center and it was not
accessable. I started up the service and made it automatic. This must have
happened just recently,

I have no idea how the service was disabled and stopped. Could this
possbily be some sort of computer attack, virus, malware, etc.? If so, what
should I be looking to do to uninfect or clean up my laptop?

I am running Windows XP sp3 on an HP laptop with Norton Internet Security
Firewall and Antivirus. I also regularly scan with Spybot. Just recently
turned on the Spybot SD Resident and TeaTimer.

Norton Internet Security has its own Security Control Center and therefore
turns off the built-in Windows Security Center. When you installed NIS, you
chose to allow Norton to use its own Security Control Center (or whatever
they call it). So there is nothing to worry about.

Turn off Spybot S&D Immunization and TeaTimer. These settings will cause
more trouble than they're worth.

Hi, I have used NIS for years and it has never disabled the security center
service. "Norton Internet Security has its own Security Control Center and
therefore turns off the built-in Windows Security Center. " I do use the NIS
firewall and it does turn off the Windows firewall, but the security center
is still started and you are able to access it from the control panel option.

I did stop the SD-resident and teatimer and restarted my laptop. The
security center service was again disabled and stopped. Something is causing
this to happen at startup. Any ideas or suggestions on where to look?

Thanks

All the installations of NIS I've seen have their own Security Center.
Perhaps you just decided not to allow it when you installed.

What is the answer to:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

What other security programs do you have installed? Are you one of those
people who thinks having 8 different antivirus/security programs installed
with 5 of them running resident is A Good Thing? It isn't and one of those
programs could be the culprit.

If you are sure the computer is malware-free, do clean-boot troubleshooting
to determine what is interfering with your Security Center service. You can
also look in Event Viewer for clues.

I have NIS 2008 running with its security center also running as well as
anti-virus.
Previously, before this problem started, I could go to ControlPanel-security
Center and see that the Firewall, not Windows firewall, was on, Automate
updates was turned off; and Antivirus (Norton) was running.

I really don't know what has changed since this problem has appeared. It
may have been recent or months ago as I don't normally have to goto the
CP-Security Center.

All I have running is SPYBOT and NIS, as they have always been sufficient.
There is nothing unusual in eventviewer.

I will give the clean-boot troubleshooting a shot.

Thanks
