computer management and security services

Rich

hello again friends;

I have chosen windows as my default firewall, after Norton kept prompting me
to use its firewall;
turn on windows firewall is checked in the security center;

a message in the security center says (the security center is off or has
stopped),
please restart your computer to turn it on, which results in the same
message again and again;

I then go to computer management>services>security center there I find
security center is disabled;
I then go to general tab of security center and set it to automatic, then I
go to log on tab and enter local system account;
when I restart my computer and go back to security services I find that all
settings have gone back to disabled;
what to do I ask? cant anything be straight forward, thank you
Rich

Hi Rich,
Do you still have Norton Protection software installed?, if you do please
accept their Firewall or Install or make their firewall as your Default
Firewall for better inbound and outbound Traffics monitoring.
Norton By default will Disable Windows Firewall and take care of your
security, unless you configure it to not to do so.
HTH.

Dear nass;
If you read my first post caefully you will see I have chosen windows
firewall as my default firewall when prompted by norton;
I have good reason to do this, as norton failed to catch spyware on my pc
which caused a very considerable slowdown,
I even had norton technichian remotely try to remove the spyware and all
they did was to use the system restore and removed some drag and drop
shortcuts from my desk top,
they also said that for an additional charge they would remotely do a pc
clean up ,or tune up, all they did there was to remove temp files, and a
partial defrag;

this I do all the time anyways so really all they succeded in doing was
create a bill for me to pay and my pc was as slow as ever;

I asked the technician why norton cant catch syware, to which he commented
norton will not catch sophysticated spyware all the time;

so I dumped my system and reinstalled windowsxp, and it works wounderfull
even with all the service pack 2 updates and my office program and
dreamweaver reinstalled back on the pc;
so I opted to use windows firewall when prompted by norton and somehow the
security center keeps switching to disable when I set it to automatic;

surely there has to be a way to set windows firewall to stay on at startup

thanks again Rich

Hi Rich,
Yes, the Norton Technician was right and told you the truth (not defending
NIS), Norton is an Anti-Virus Protection software not a complete Anti-malware
detector, so it will catch the obvious or may be not, but it is good at
detecting Trojans/viruses/worms and it's firewall more superior than Windows
firewall in blocking hackers and unwanted Traffics.
Which the technician didn't tell you that you want a dedicated Anti-malware
program like Windows Defender or onecare or these program:
Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
SuperAntispyware - Free
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html
Norton will scan for Virus and it's firewall will protect your system, then
the Anti-malware will scan for malware and clean them if been found, that's
how it is work.
Many people will come after me and tell keep the Norton Firewall enabled and
turn Windows firewall OFF.
Did you installed SP2 and all the updates for windows?.

Windows Firewall options are grayed out
