Security Center says virus protection is at risk

I recently formatted this computer and loaded Norton Antivirus 2002. The
virus monitoring system in the Windows XP security center says under virus
protection, "check status" and the little warning balloon pops up from the
toolbar. If I go into the security center and check the box that says "I
have an antivirus program that I'll monitor myself" the virus protection line
in the security center colors itself yellow and says "not monitored." Why is
that? I've loaded Norton 2002 on my other XP computer a year or two ago and
the security center says that the virus protection is on and is colored blue,
no matter how the "I have an antivirus program that I'll monitor myself" box
is checked. I heard a rumor that Symantec no longer supports Norton 2002.
Is that maybe a cause for this newly formatted computer to act the way it
does in the security center?

You should not use such an obsolete antivirus program. It is no longer
supported by Symantec and you will not be able to solve the issue with
Security Center integration. Uninstall NAV 2002 and replace it with a
current version av, version not earlier than 2005. You will find that
most techs (me, too) do not recommend Norton consumer-level antivirus
products any more. Some suggested programs are Kaspersky, NOD32, and I
use F-Prot on my Windows machines. Do a Google Groups Advanced Search
constraining your search to a few of the Microsoft newsgroups for input
on recommended antivirus programs.
