Screensaver doesn't always work

This is driving me nuts. I DON'T have wireless mouse or keyboard and have
checked every ting in this forum. Sometimes the screensaver will work for a
day or 2,sometimes for a couple of cycles. I have Windows XP and use the
basic 3D Text saver. If I reboot it seems to come back temporarily. The only
new program I have installed in a month is Cakewalk's PyroAudio Creator.

Thanks for any responses.

What do you mean by 'doesn't always work'?

If you open the screensaver tab and preview the screensaver (careful not to
move mouse/press key afterwards) - does it work?

Do you have any hibernation/sleep rules set?

So check what processes are running on your host. Anything that goes
scanning through your disk's files, like anti-virus or indexing software, is
going to change the state of your host to "not idle". Does the problem
still exist if you reboot into Windows' safe mode?

Why rely on the screen saver to protect your host? That doesn't kick in
until N minutes after you *leave* your host. That means a 15-minute screen
saver could be inactive for that long after you leave your host and someone
else can come along and start using your host. Instead immediately lock
your host as you leave it. Some keyboards have programmable buttons and
their software already includes a selection you can program for a button
that will lock the host immediately. You can add a shortcut to a toolbar in
your Windows taskbar that runs the following command to immediately lock
your host:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

Click it and the host immediately locks. Or you can hit Winkey+L to
immediately lock your host.

When you leave your host, lock it THEN. Don't wait for the screen saver to
kick in. The screen saver should be a safety net when you forget to lock
your host when leaving it.

It works when you go to the Control Panel always. I can set it for 1 min.
and screen shut off at 2 min. and it will work. Testing the Screensaver
always works also. I leave my PC on most of the time. After leaving it idle
past the set screensaver time or in the morning my main screen will still be
on,but not always. I have 5 personal setting users but only 3 get used on a
regular basis.
Thanks for the reply
