Screen saver freezes (pauses)

I have a new install of WinXP Pro on a clean hard drive. With no other programs loaded, the screen saver runs and pauses and runs. It does this continually. I have tried updating the video and monitor drivers (ASUS nvidia v7700 deluxe & Viewsonic A90f). Also updated motherboard drivers an Bios (ASUS P4s533-X). No change. System is a P4 2.4GHz with 512 mb Ram
