IntelliPoint 5.2 Appears to Cause ScreenSaver Problems

I have just built a new system, and have found what appears to be a problem
with IntelliPoint 5.2 which prevents the screen saver from functioning
properly. In my troubleshooting of the problem, I had set the screen saver
activation time to one minute. The problem I see is that after a minute, the
screen saver will activate. One minute later, it will turn off. One minute
later, it will activate. One minute later, it will turn off. This repeats
continuously. I had initially thought this may have been related to the
installation of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, but when I backed out the SP2
update and reverted to XP SP1 (my installation media), I still see the
problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled IntelliPoint 5.2, with reboots
in between, and the problem persists. I downgraded to IntelliPoint 5.0 and I
do not have the problem.

My system consists of the following hardware:
ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz (Northwood)
2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM
NVIDIA 5600 Ultra Video Card
Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard and Wireless Optical Wheel Mouse

The system was built using Windows XP w/SP1, followed by XP SP2 upgrade,
followed by the ASUS device drivers. I began installing applications one by
one, rebooting in between each installation to test / isolate the application
causing the screen saver issues. Other software installed on the system
prior to installing the IntelliPoint 5.2 software was Office 2003, Symantec
AntiVirus 8.1 (was disabled when installing IntelliPoint), WinZip 9.0, and
IntelliPoint 5.2.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how I can correct this and use IntelliPoint
5.2?

I upgraded XP Home from SP1 to Intellipoint 5.2 (Trackball Explorer) and
then SP2. Running the 3D Text screensaver at 1 minute kickin time works
as I expect - no on-off as you describe. The only bug I see is I can't
then pick (none), as Windows XP screensaver gets selected. I have to
pick the blank line above (none) to get no active screensaver.

Interesting that you too are experiencing a screen saver issue as well. Did
you happen to notice if your issue appeared pre or post SP2 installation?
That is to say, do you think it was introduced by SP2? Since SP2 was the
first software I installed after the base OS installation, there may be
remnants on my system causing the issue with IP5.2, even when I backed out
SP2. I'm tempted to reformat my system and install just the OS followed
immediately by IP5.2 to see if I notice the issue. But that is a bit of an
involved process.

I last ran a screensaver maybe one month prior to SP2 install, and had
no anomoly at that time.

Hi Pervis - FYI, be aware that 5.2 doesn't support all older equipment
versions, excluding specifically the Wireless Natural Multimedia Keyboard
and accompanying Wireless InelliMouse Explorer. You'll need to revert to
4.2 if one of these cases applies.

Hi Jim,

I have the Wireless Optical Mouse, not the Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer.
When IntelliPoint 5.2 is installed, in the Mouse Properties box under
Connected Device, I do see Wireless Optical Mouse listed as a pick option,
leading me to beleive it is a supported device. In the pick list, they also
list Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0, which I do not have, but by listing both,
this also suggests to me that IP5.2 does differentiate between the two
devices.

Also, on the Download Software page for Mouse software, if I enter my
product, OS and language, I am directed to the download page for IP5.2,
further leading me to believe that this software is suitable for my hardware.

Regarding support of the Wireless Natural Multimedia Keyboard, it appears to
be supported in IntelliType 5.2, which is now also installed on my system.

Thanks.

Well, as one more update to toss in here, I wiped my HD, re-installed WinXP
Pro SP1, rebooted, and only installed IP5.2 afterwards. Unfortunately, I'm
still seeing this problem. Any ideas how I would proceed further in
resolving this issue?

Thanks.

In that environment, if you remove the 'mouse' and plug in an old plain
PS/2 mouse (with power off), does the screensaver problem go away? If
not, ditto for the keyboard.

Yes, if I replace the Wireless Optical Mouse with an IntelliMouse Optical,
then the screen saver problem goes away. Does this mean IP5.2 does not
really support this hardware, when all references I've seen indicate that it
should?

Sadly, I am also noticing another problem in that the monitor does not power
down even though in my Power Options settings my Power Scheme tells it to
shut down after x minutes (was originally 20 minutes, but after noticing the
problem, I also turned this down to 2 minutes to speed up testing). This is
the case with either version of IntelliPoint, using either mouse. I don't
see any BIOS settings that would control this. (ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
w/current v. 1017 BIOS)

Thanks.

At last, someone encoutered the same problem i'm facing.

I thought that my mouse was getting old & was messing around the
screensaver.
I own the MS wireless optical mouse, and face the same issue.
Any screensavers that I 've tried stops working eventually (without
touching the keyboard or mouse).

Moreover, there is something wrong with the battery charge monitor, it
always states that battery level is low (even if I have just swaped
the batteries with brand new ones).

I will downgrade intellipoint 5.2 to 5.

Bye bye.
