Intellipoint necessary for MS Mouse?

I was trying to use a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000. It came with
a CD with Intellipoint software, but I thought that was just for "full
functionality" and that I should be able to get basic mouse
functionality without installing Intellipoint.

However, when I plug the wireless transceiver into a USB port, Windows
finds the transceiver but then fail to install the device. This happens
both on XP Pro sp3 and Win 7 Pro x64.

Do I need the Intellipoint software for any functionality -- or is this
mouse no good (brand new, never used before)?

This appears to be caused by something *other* than not installing
Intellipoint. Google groups link: http://tinyurl.com/yl35qry

Anyone have any insights?

After plugging in the transceiver, press the button on top of it. While it's
flashing, press the small button on the bottom of the mouse.

Never mind. I missed the "mobile" part. I was thinking of my Laser Mouse
6000.

Because no solutions were forthcoming, I installed Intellipoint on the
XP Pro box. That was not the problem. The mouse still isn't recognized.
I think it's defective and I'm going to try to exchange it.

This may be a silly question, but did you install the battery in the right
direction?

It's not a silly question; I thought of that after I went to bed last
night. But it was installed in the correct direction. I'm also going to
try a fresh battery. However, the blue light in the mouse does come on
(there's an on/off switch on this mouse), so I think the battery's OK.

I've actually tried to install this mouse on XP Pro, Vista, and Win 7,
all with negative results. I've only installed the Intellipoint software
on XP Pro (that didn't help), but I believe that the mouse should be
capable of basic mouse functions without installing Intellipoint.

Things got the farthest with Win 7. Win 7 identified the Nano
Transceiver, but then tried and failed to install a driver (whether for
the mouse or the wifi transceiver, I can't tell). I can't remember
exactly which properties dialog I opened in Win 7, but I did get to one
that gave Error Code 43. According to this KB article, that means that
"the device failed in some manner." http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123/

Neither XP nor Vista even got as far as identifying the device.

Did you sync it with the transmitter? BTW, this is a newsgroup and it's
not unusual for answers to arrive in a day or two.

Full functionality tends to mean the advanced features (button
programming) and advanced visual setting (enhanced cursors.) One
other advanced feature that appears with several wireless mice is a
mouse battery level indicator.

This particular wireless mouse doesn't seem to support/need syncing. At
least there is no "sync" or "connect" button and no mention of it in the
brief instructions that came with the mouse. This particular mouse uses
a "nano" transceiver, that only sticks out about 0.3 inches when it's
plugged into a USB port, so there is no place on the transceiver for a
sync button. The only control on the mouse itself is an on/off switch.
I tried turning the mouse on before plugging the transceiver into the
computer and also after. Neither worked.

Here are the instructions in full:
1. Install the software (required for full functionality)
2. Remove the battery cover and insert the AA alkaline battery.
3. Make sure the mouse is turned on. When on the move, turn the mouse
off to extend battery life.
4. Insert the transceiver into a USB port on your computer. Setup is
complete.
i. If you store the transceiver in the mouse, press the button to
release it.

I can wait a day or so ... it will probably take at least that long for
Microsoft Customer Service to respond to my email asking to return this
thing.

Then it could be DOA, that has been known to happen on occasion. ;-)

After you pressed the connect button on the receiver did you press the
connect button on the bottom of the mouse. It is important that you press
the connect button on the bottom of the mouse while the lights are flashing
on the receiver. Also are you sure your USB port is working. Put a flash
drive in it, etc., to check it.

Same mistake I made, then discovered my error- the wireless mobile mouse
doesn't have the button on the receiver. Operative word was "mobile" and I
missed it, too.

There is no connect button on either the mouse or the receiver. See my
response to Bob I.

If the device isn't DOA, it's doing a pretty good imitation of it.
