Screen Resolution Problem

Guest

One of the kids changed the screen resolution and I can't get it back. I did
a repair installation and can now at least get into safe mode. In safe mode
it let me change it from 640X480 to 800X600 but that's as far as it will go.
The computer still hangs after the Win XP logo and before the welcome screen.
I tried to reinstall the video driver but it won't let me. Is it because
I'm in safe mode? This is Win XP Pro. Please help. Thanks

Shelley, what procedure did you use to install the video driver? Go to
Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall any
Video Software and Drivers from there. Then rt click on MyComputer>select
Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>Display Adapter. Expand and choose yours
and rt click and select Uninstall. Restart and then try installing the
Video Drivers and software.

I haven't tested this, but when in Safe Mode, open the Device Manager and
delete the video card. Reboot.

Hi,

While in safe mode, go to Start/Run/msconfig/boot.ini. Once there, check
off /Basevideo, then reboot. Once in normal mode, go to the Device Manager
and either update your drivers or reinstall them. Note: Don't base your
resolution to what appears via safe mode as it runs in 640x800 as default.

Also, if the resolution was changed via playing a game, etc:

Go to Start/Control Panel/Display/Settings/Advanced/Adapter/List all modes.
And change it back there.

Added info:

Try looking through some of the settings listed here:
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\VIDEO

Checkpoints/options to consider: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to
(use as an example)

1. HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\VIDEO\{}\0000\....

2. Find DefaultSettings.XResolution. That is your y axis. Edit as a Decimal
to what you want it to be. (ie 800).

2. Find DefaultSettings.YResolution. That is your x axis. Edit as a decimal
to what you want it to be. (ie 600).

3. Reboot.
