Screen Resolution changes

When the lid is closed and re-opened on a Dell Inspiron
8100 the screen resolution changes. The numeric values
(1020x768) remain the same but the visual screen
resolution gets smaller and the only way to correct it is
to reboot. Any ideas other than don't close the lid?
