Hello
I have recently become the sole user of this pc that used to have many users.
I gave it a fresh start, and formatted the hard drive, and started over with
my needs.
I'm having problems with "screen freeze", in which I finally have to do a
shut down of the pc
Another problem I am having is that I can be working on the pc, and it shuts
itself down, and restarts by itself, thus, losing all I was working on.
I've run ad/spyware programs and virus scans, and this still occurs.
Anyone out there with any suggestions or similar problems workarounds?

Thanks for any help ----

you could try downloading the latest drivers for your graphics card?

when the pc shutsdown, does it just "shutdown" or suddenly go blank and
start booting xp again?

Hey tiim,
Thanks for your reply.
It seems to just suddenly go blank, doesn't show any programs closing, etc.
You mentioned downloading the latest drivers for the graphics card ... is
this something that would be on the pc's installation software, or go to
Gateway's website and download it?
Thanks ....

sounds like it maybe a graphics problem.

sometimes your pc manuafacture do have the lastest drivers so do try there.
sometimes they ask for your seriel number and give you a list.

if not we need to know the card.

right click on my computer click propeties then the hardware tab. click on
device manage button. exapand the "display adapaters" list and let us know
what it says there.

if that too many options, try right click on desktop, choose propeties. then
settings tab. then advance button. click on "adapter" tab and let us know
what it says under adapter type.

then we will go from there.

Hey tiim..
I checked on the graphics display, and on the Gateway website for drivers.
Under the expand of "display adapters" list, it showed the single listing:

Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller

An additional notation suggested not installing drivers over those that show
"installed", but I might try it again later if nothing further can be done.
It seemed to have toned down and stopped for a while, then it popped up and
did it again.

I appreciate your time and directions assisting me with this.
Thanks

well if you dont wana install the driver just in case might i suggest if
still under warranty is to email your pc manafacture or ring them and see
what they can do.

I had similar problem ages ago on a computer and it was a graphics problem
but in your case it may or may not be.

You could also try start -> help and support and windows update. And see if
there is any drivers listed under there, that is a more painless way of doing
it. But download all the updates there anyway and that could fix the prob.

Hey tiim
I'll do that and see if I can get it corrected.
One odd feature I've noticed with this, is that when a program is running
and IF I click on another program from the SYS TRAY ... that's when the
"black out" seems to occur.

I thank you for your time and patience.

that is very interesting to note, is it always the same program or different?
Same sys tray icon or different?

If same what is the icon...

Also keep us posted on the other side.

tiim...
You hit the nail on the head. It was a faulty/corrupt driver for the
graphincs card ....I kept searching, contacted Gateway (with a tech that I
could hear flipping pages in a manual--well trained???).
It seems to be working fine now.
Many thanks to you tiim for the patience and help you provided.
Happy trails to you.
