screen freeze on shut down

i have just upgraded from ME to XP having the following problem:

Sometimes on shutdown the screen freezes and I have to re-boot. Happens at
various stages but normally when "windows is shuting down" Have done a virus
sweep all is ok. I have a time pc.

Anyone know what the problem is? and how to correct it?
