Scanning problems after setting up a wireless network

I wonder if anybody can help me - or point to a website where i can get some help.
I've recently set up a wireless network to connect my two PCs. The new one runs under Windows XP while my older PC's OS is Windows 98 SE. My old PC is located in my bedroom and has got a printer and scanner attached. The printer works fine and can be accessed from both machines but for some reason, i don't seem to be able to use my scanner anymore. The scanner is a Umax Astra 1210P and is connected to the parallel port of the printer (Epson stylus 460). I use OmniPage Pro 10.0 as my main OCR application. However, when scanning a document, nothing seems to be picked up by the scanner (or long lines are displayed). The same result is obtained when using the standard MS Imaging package. The scanner seems to work fine though as the connection can be started by the scan utility. Can anything be done to solve that problem? or is it that both hardware and software are out of date and i need to get a new scanner? Also, i don't necessarily need to use the scanner from both PCs as i'm quite happy to use it from my old PC only, as long as i can use it all
I've tried to contact the technical support teams from Umax and the OCR manufacturer but didn't get much help (OmniPage Pro 10 is no longer supported and the Umax website only has an FAQ section with no email address to contact someone about a specifix problem)
Any help would be much appreciated

Cheers

XP does not support piggybacking of parallel port devices. Switch one to
use USB.
