Scanner software?

Anyone know of any freeware scanner software that could replace the
software that initially came with the scanner?

I've been having a lot of problems with ScanSoft's PaperPort products and
would *really* like to find a replacement.

Thanks.

Depends whether you're talking about image scanning or OCR (converting
scans to text). You do need the TWAIN driver that came with the
scanner (or an updated version of the same), but once that's installed
many programs besides PaperPort can perform and save scans.

Well there are lots of programs that can use the TWAIN interface to grab an
image. But under Windows this will still pop up the vendor's software in
order to do the actual scanning.

You might want to try IrfanView (File | Select TWAIN Source) and then you
can do File | Acquire to grab images from the scanner.

If the scanner's own software is just hopeless under Windows, you might
want to check to see if your scanner is supported by the Linux's SANE

But then you'd have to be running Linux, Mac OS X or another UNIX

Thanks, Jem. This works. Can also save it to .pdf by printing to a
pdf-print driver.

Many thanks!
