scanner driver download not co-operating

Novice is trying to connect an old flat bed scanner 'canoscan FB636U
originally used on windows 98. It was originally made for the Japanese
market so the cd disc is in Japanese so not much good to me.

I found a driver for my windows xp from the canon site. but it just wont
connect the scanner.

should I have the scanner connected or unconnected to the pc when I download
the software from canon's site, or would that not make a difference?

I've tried downloading the driver a couple of times and still no results.
any suggestions appreciated. thanks.

It could be too old for XP. Part of MS planned obsolescence deal that if
hardware outfits don't supply drivers for older OSes you will have to buy a
newer OS and find you need a new scanner too.

There are install instructions available too. Did you read them?

Your post makes no sense. If a hardware device manufacturer doesn't provide
a driver that is their responsibility. It doesn't matter what the OS is.
Legacy hardware has always been in issue, particularly with scanners and
printers.
