I am using XP Pro SP2.

When I open the Printer and Scanner Wizard I get the message that the
computer cannot detect the scanner etc.

I have a Canoscan Lide 20 installed and it operates in all other
applications with no problems.

Any thoughts please on how I can overcome this message?

It's a scanner that takes power from the USB port. You have different kinds
of USB ports, use a powered one- unpowered may only supply 100mA or less.

Thanks Alan, do I understand you to mean that will all the USB ports that I
have on this computer that I need to buy a powered USB for the Scanner
Wizard to run although the scanner will work OK in Word and all other
applications?

Nope, I missed that it was working with other apps.

Download the latest versions of those programs fron Canons site. Uninstall
the existing ones. Install the updated ones you have downloaded. I had
similar problems with the scanner diassapearing from the system altogether.
I also had to clean the registry of all left over entries before the
reinstall or it wouldn't work. An absolute pain, and I probably won't but a
Canan scanner again, although it does work well for the short periods before
the next reinstall.
