Scanner and Camera Problems

I am using an older scanner with updated drivers. Sometimes the scanner
works, sometimes it doesn't. I thought that might have been because it was
an older model. Recently, I bought a digital camera that works as a webcam.
The webcam will not work, but everything else is fine. I checked the webcam
on another computer running windows 98 and it was fine.

Is there something in Windows XP that makes it difficult to run USB imaging
devices? I know the ports are working fine. I also tried disabling the
firewall and other security software with no results. The computer
recognizes the camera and scanner (most of the time), but when I go to use
the items, there's a program error. I worked with HP for a while to help
with the scanner problem.

The camera downloads still pictures and videos taken with the camera
unplugged from the computer just fine.

I hope I explained the problem in an unconfusing manner. If anyone needs
more info, let me know.

Try disconnecting *all* USB devices and
try them one at a time. Have a look at the
following article (I know it says scanners
but it can apply to other USB devices as well):

(324756) You Cannot Simultaneously Use
Multiple USB Scanners in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324756

For the camera, I would suggest using a
USB card reader to download the images
and videos to your computer.

I think I would try uninstalling the scanner
and reboot the computer...this should allow
WinXP to install basic drivers that might work
better than what you are currently using...if not
you can reinstall the current drivers.

BTW...how can the camera download the
pictures if it is *not* connected to the computer?

I can download the photos from the camera using the USB connector. I have no
problem with still photos and videos taken when the camera is not connected.
(It is made by Sakar International, who have been absolutely no help at all).

I have uninstalled and re-installed the USB ports many times. I use each
imaging item one at a time. XP recognizes them and sometimes the scanner
will initialize, but I often get a program error problem. I have used both
the software from HP as well as the camera and scanner wizard. I have also
uninstalled and reinstalled the software. Sometimes it will work fine after
that, sometimes it won't. (It is an HP 4200c with updated software for XP)

With the webcam portion of my camera, I can download still pictures fine,
but the webcam won't work. XP seems to recognize the camera with no problem,
but I can't get a picture. Webcam feature works fine with windows 98, that's
why I was asking if XP has something in the software that makes imaging using
a USB port difficult. I also use AVG virus software and have turned that off
as well, with no effect.

Sounds like you have already tried everything.

Just wondering...is your system fully updated
from Microsoft Update including WinXP SP2?

And...did you try uninstalling the scanner and
allowing WinXP to install basic drivers? As
you can see in the following article...your scanner
is supported:

(293356) Windows XP: List of Scanners That
Are Supported by Windows Image Acquisition
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293356

As for the webcam...if you have several USB
ports...try them all.

Yes, my version of windows XP is updated and I use Service Pack 2. My
scanner is also on the list of scanners supported. I am going to try to
uninstall or disconnect various "add on" programs that may also be blocking
the items. I will still browse the newsgroups to see if others who have
similar problems may have a solution that works for my computer. I
uninstalled the scanner and rebooting the computer and XP recognizes and
installs them, but they don't work right.

Well, here's what I have done so far (with some success):

I made the changes to Real Player 10 that have been mentioned before in this
group. Then, I uninstalled the software that came with the camera (PhoTags)
because I have other programs that can aquire photos.

The scanner worked a couple of times, then stopped. I uninstalled and
re-installed the HP software and it worked again, eventually.

I was able to get the webcam to work using MSN messenger, but had no luck,
as of yet, using it in Yahoo!. In fact, when I tried to use it, Yahoo!
Messenger froze up on me. I will keep trying there.

I may re-intall the camera software (PhoTags) and see if that has an effect.

I was able to use both devices a the same time, too.

So, I basically got some use.
