Scandisk

Please tell me about running scandisk. I am new to WinXP. Previously
windows or Norton would run scandisk with no problem. Now I see that they
will only run on a reboot. It says that something else is controlling the
disk. What is this? also, is it advisiable to shut down all other running
processes or just schedule it on th enext reboot. Thank you

Either way is ok but it is easier to run it on the next bootup. You need to
close all open programs to run it "live". Remember though that if your drive
is NTFS, using scandisk is not critical as NTFS drives are designed to be
"self-repairing". If you have Fat 32, run scandisk every month or so.

You are trying to run scandisk on the system (C:) drive. Clearly the drive
is always in use when you are attempting to run scandisk. You will always
have to schedule for boot time to run it on C:. If you have other drives
and none of your programs are accessing them at the moment, then you can run
a scandisk on them without booting.

Does the scandisk run at boot time store the log somewhere? It usually
flashes by so quick, it's hard to even read.

Scandisk doesn't exist in XP, and has never existed in ANY NT
architecture OS. Scandisk was a 98/ME program that won't run in XP.

Instead, use chkdsk. Chkdsk needs exclusive access to the hard drive
- and the only way it can get that is to wait until the next reboot
before the OS grabs full control of the volume you are scanning.
