Windows 2000

Recently, I upgraded from Win 98 to Win 2000.

In Win 98, I was able to set Scandisk, Defrag, and Disk Cleanup under
'Scheduled Tasks' to run at certain times.

In Win 2000, however, there is no listing of either Scandisk (or its
equivilent) or Defrag under 'Scheduled Tasks' so I have to load them manually.

How do I add Scandisk (or its equiv) and defrag to run under scheduled tasks?

Second, when I try to set the homepage as something other than MSN.com,
(under Tools, Internet Options, General), it goes back to MSN.com as the
default setting. How do I fix that?

Cheers :)

You will get a better answer if you repost your question in a newsgroup that
supports Windows 2000 - unlike this one that is for the support of Windows
XP, as in the title.......

Correct. Win2K does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was
a Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the WinNT
OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk," which performs
much better.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.

However, unless you are actually experiencing a specific problem
related to your hard drive's file system, there's no real need to run
Chkdsk. The utility is not designed to be used as part of any period
maintenance plan. If a file system or hard drive error is detected
during the boot process, Chkdsk will also launch automatically.

How do I add Scandisk (or its equiv) and defrag to run under scheduled tasks?

For Chkdsk, you'd have to create some sort of batch file to schedule
Chkdsk for the next reboot, and then shutdown and restart the computer.
Bear in mind that this is a totally unnecessary action, unless your
goal is to marginally increase the wear and tear on your hard drive,
thereby possibly shortening it's service life. Defrag cannot be
scheduled directly, but there are 3rd party applications (try Google)
that will enable you to schedule periodic defragmentations.

Is there a group policy in place that resets the IE defaults each time
the computer is booted?

Thanks again for your previous assistance :)

No, this is a personal computer so there is no group policy in place. How do
I reset it?

Second, I have problems running Disk Cleanup under Scheduled Tasks and
manually. It opens with the status bar but then it just stops without
checking anything. I put a disk in and tested it in A drive and it performs
properly but it doesn't do anything with the C: drive.
