When i tried to run my disk defragmentation, it told me that i do not have
"scandisk" on my computer and shut down...what do I do? My computer is
running slow, and doing a disk cleanup and scanning my files for virus makes
it run a little better for a bit. Would appreciate help...thanks

There is no Scandisk in NT-based operating system like XP. Chkdsk is
used instead.

How to use Chkdsk - http://tinyurl.com/2obcd
How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265/en-us

However, if going through the procedures you are using only makes the
machine better for a little while then you have other problems that
Chkdsk will not solve.

I suggest you first make sure the machine is virus/malware-free by going
through these procedures systematically:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, plus Ewido. Do all
prep/finishing work and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe
Mode.

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

Then if you are still experiencing problems on a known-clean machine,
post back with details per this link:
http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

First, Refer to the following site:

http://www.homeandoffice.hp.com/hho/cache/390-0-0-225-121.html

Secondly:

Please mention the proper error message as there is No Scandisk utility in
Windows XP. It is called CHKDSK.

Furthermore, have you checked your disk within from My computer or from
Command Prompt. If not so, then do it first. Read the following article:

http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/scandisk.htm

To run it from Command Prompt, click Start - Run - type CMD and press enter.
at the command prompt type: CHKDSK [Drive Letter:] /F
or type CHKDSK /? for help.

If unable to run then try to run CHKDSK and DEFRAG in Safe Mode.

Hope this help, let us know!
