Defrag and Scandisk locking up.

Scandisk will get to phase 4 on both the chkdsk before windows starts and on
the regular windows Scandisk they both lock up. Then almost as soon as I
start defrag the computer locks up. Does anybody know a fix for this... the
computer is fairly new... It seems to run fine and I know what your thinking
if it runs fine leave it alone... well I want it to continue to run fine
after the fact it still won't scandisk or defrag. Anybody know of any
programs for download free or that charge that can fix this? Or maybe just a
trick I can do maybe a regedit fix or something. Thanks alot.

You can download a harddrive diagnostic utility from the manufacturers
website for your drive.

If Chkdsk consistently fails, you may well have a problem with the hard
drive. Download a diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's
web site and test the hard drive. Also, as you say the computer is
fairly new, contact the manufacturer's technical support. In the
meantime, be backing up your important data frequently.
