Raid 0 and scandisk OK together?

Based on what I see so far, using Scandisk with Raid 0 shoud be OK (assume
defrag and scandisk are used interchangeably). Can any one confirm 100%?

Oh, ya, you have to ask. Shortly after running scandisk (which showed a lot
of fragmented files...) my system froze and wont boot because it is missing a
system file. But I can not replace the system file because during early boot,
it does not see my hard drive. So trying to root cause and figure how to get
going again or if I have to start over.

Thanks

Instead of using "Scandisk" and Defrag interchangably, try using CHKDSK
/f instead.

Thanks for the reply and certainly will take that in to account in the
future. Need to understand what I am dealing with from the actions already
taken.
Thanks, Sharky

RAID 0 for the operating system is not my idea of safe. I will let some
one else tell you if you can wiggle out of this one.

We're not sure what you did. Scandisk doesn't exist in XP. Defrag does but
has a few switches which may or may not be relevant. We need more details.
What exactly is the computer configuration? What RAID controller are you
using? What program did you run? What switches did you use when running the
program? What exact error messages do you see now. What have you done so far
trying to fix the problem? Did the error messages change after you tried any
fixes?

(with egg on my face) it was disk defragmenter that I used and NOT
scandisk...so use to using scandisk I guess.

So, my first question can "disk defragmenter" in XP home be used on two
drives that are raid 0. Answer is yes.

So, I have I suspect a Hard drive issue.
I have a Gigabyte GA-8*925XE-G using ITE 8212 GigaRAID Chipset raid set for
raid 0 (stripping) using two seagate ATA100 120GB disk running XP home.

Shortly after performing disk defragmenter (default settings, selected
defragment button) disk was about 20% to 30% full and guessing about a 1/3 to
1/2 of the files showed fragemented. shortly after performing this, the
system froze. I did a hard boot and while booting it said system file
missing, use system disk to replace missing file. I reset my boot drive to CD
and tried booting with my XP CD. It said it could not proceed because it
could not find my hard drive. So, I would have to guess one of my drives went
south...?

Thanks

With Raid0, when one drive goes 'south', ALL is lost.

Why did you choose to do so ? Do you have a need for sustained fast HD
transfer, like analog video capture ?

When booting from the CD to do a repair you need to load the RAID drivers
for the GigaRAID chipset. You'll need the drivers on a floppy disk. Your
motherboard should have come with a CD that has a utility on it to create
the floppy disk or you may have to just copy the drivers to a floppy disk.
You'll need another working computer to do this. When booting from the
Windows CD you'll see a prompt at the bottom of the screen to press F6 to
load drivers. I can't remember the exact wording but that's pretty close.
Press F6 and insert the floppy disk. Windows will load and you will be able
to get to the repair console or re-install Windows. If you get Windows
working my recommendation would be to backup your data and re-install
Windows without RAID 0.

....more because I could do it and I had an extra drive cheap (rebates, etc). I
do not keep critical data on the HD and in the past gone with single drives
so why not get the increase in speed. Just seems a coincidence that I defrag
and then the system goes down...

Thanks a ton
