Scan always says there are updates when it's been updated

I continually allow updates on my XP Professional, yet
when I scanned to see if I was current, it said I needed
a critical update so I did it and it took forever on
broadband...then out of curiosity I scanned again and it
said I needed 7 updates...WHAT GIVES? Does microsoft keep
us current or not? And to get service from them is next
to nil....I paid for my Norton yet I can't get a direct
answer....one reason we need COMPETITION!
