Says Updates Ready to Install, But None There

I just did a clean reinstall of XPHome SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 8600. I have
Automatic Updates set to tell me when they are downloaded, and I'll install
myself.

The first notification I got from the yellow shield in the system tray
contained 7 updates. I installed them all and rebooted.

The yellow shield appeared saying there were updates ready for my computer.
When I click on the shield, and choose Custom, there's no updates showing.

What's up?

Thanks

I also just discovered that if I go to the Windows Update Site, and after
Microsoft verifies that I do have the proper update software installed, I
click Custom, I get "The website has encountered a problem and cannot
display the page you are trying to view." Error number 0x8024001D

If I click on Review your update history, there is a list of 398 updates
all dated today, the source listed as Automatic Updates.

Only the 7 installed the first time I clicked on the yellow shield have
an update name and show succeeded, the other 391 have no name and show
failed. I have no idea where these 391 came from.

Help.
