SP3 again, does it lurk?

Hello All!

I have mentioned that I decided not to try installing SP3 until I
receive it on CD from Microsoft but today, the yellow shield announcing
"updates ready to be installed" appeared within about 15 minutes of
rebooting. I don't know when the shield appeared since watching a
computer boot is like watching paint dry. Anyway, I have had two
failures in installing the SP3 update under similar conditions to today
but the first download took considerably longer and a hardware check was
successfully performed on my machine. I have a broadband connection . I
cancelled today's upgrade when it was announced that the update was SP3.

Does this mean that a download did not actually happen and SP3 has been
lurking around somewhere waiting for permission to install? If I am
going to install from the CD I would like to remove all previous traces.

I think once SP3 is installed then the update will go away.

I suspect that may well be so but my prvious experiences make me worry
that I could run into interference from previous downloads if I use the
"official" CD.

I don't think the CD will be any different to the files you can download,
either the ISO image or the full installation files. You can check the
download folders under "C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles" to see if SP3 is there.
Personally I don't think that will be a problem.

I think it should, James. I built a new computer a couple of months
ago and installed Windows afresh from my MS XP Pro SP2 disk. I
noticed at that time that automatic updates (which I set to download
automatically but wait for me to install them) from the built-in
WindowsUpdate didn't offer me SP3. (I downloaded SP3 separately, from
the official site.) However, as I had some Office components, I
installed MicrosoftUpdate, and shortly after I noticed the yellow
shield. Amongst the updates was SP3, and the installer ordered then
such that SP3 would be installed last. While they were sitting
waiting, I installed the SP3 that I had previously downloaded. On
subsequent reboot, MicrosoftUpdate presented again the updates, this
time minus SP3. As for IE7, I can't remember if it was presented as an
update, or whether I had to go to MSUpdate options (rather than
criticals) to find it.
Hope this helps.
