Unknown Updates

I am running XP Pro, SP3 with all the updates, Ad-Aware and AVG, with
Auto Update set to Download and Ask Before Installing.

My problem is that occasionally I get a Yellow Shield in the
Notification Area which with a Right Click reports that Downloading is
taking place.

The Yellow Shield disappears before I can get to it.

The next thing that happens is when I Shutdown my computer the program
holds and reports "Do Not Unplug Your Computer, It Will Switch Off
Automatically", this then changes to "Updating 1 of (1 or more)".

What is being updated , am I being attacked with a malware, and is
Microsoft reporting something from my computer?

Your assistance will be appreciated.

At any time, you can go to Windows or Microsoft Update and check your
update history, to find out exactly which updates were delivered and when.

The only way to find out if you've been hacked is to test your computer
with anti-malware software. (And even that isn't foolproof.)

There are lots of updates offered recently by Microsoft and there is no need
to worry about it and it is normal that if the updates not been given the
chance to install, it will install in shutdownprocedure.
How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP

Best if you select this option:
Notify me but don't automatically download or install them
