Seriously, I have no sound. I recently reformatted my computer, and
eventually got everything up and running, except the sound. None of the
troubleshooting helped me, because when I try to select a device to use under
device manager, I can't even highlight the pulldown. Earlier, there was some
type of device under the unknown area of device manager called Multimedia
Audio Controller . The devices it lists under Sound, video, and game
controllers are Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture
Devices, Media Control Devices, and Video Codecs. None of these can be
updated driver-wise. Was this because I deleted the FAT partition when I was
reformatting today? Help...

enter this sequences of commands from a CMD box:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd %SystemRoot%\System32
start devmgmt.msc

this will open up an instance of device manager. Select
view/show hidden devices.

See if you have problem or duplicate of your sound device
driver under sound, video and game.

Anders, do not worry about the partition deleting; it caused you no problems
with sound.
Do I have this right:
You had a Multimedia Audio Controller (in need of a driver) listed under
"unknown."
Now you cannot find this device in Device Manager.
Did the device disappear, because it appears that it is only in need of a
driver (did your motherboard come with a disk and did you use it?)

Download and install the drivers for you audio chipset/card from the
manufacturer.

Download the latest drivers for your audio device to a location you remember
or burn to CD or other media.
Disable or physically remove the audio device, reboot. Shutdown, reinstall
audio device, you should be prompted for location of drivers, Browse to the
location and install updated drivers.
Follow prompts to completion.
