Device Manager Not Listing Video Codecs

Guest

When I look in the Device Manager, "Sound, Video and Game Controllers"
the following sub-groups display
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC

The video codecs that I know are installed and working, do not show up.

I ran Sherlock 2.0 and also GSpot 2.6 and they both list out the many
Video Codecs that are installed.

I can play video clips OK and my DVD drive is working fine and plays a DVD
without any problems.

I have a Sony VAIO and have used the installed "Click To DVD" and "DVGate"
software to create my own DVDs.

Is there a way to bring back the listing of Video Codecs into Device Manager?

Many thanks

Several of the codecs are not "plug and play" set up. You need to see them as
"non-plug and play" devices:

Click on Start --> Run --> CMD <OK>

Then in the Dos CMD.EXE window; enter the following:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd %SystemRoot%\System32
start devmgmt.msc

You are now in Device Manager. Then click on View and select "Show Hidden
Devices..." You should see the "missing" codecs.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I followed your instructions, and Device Manager revealed many more devices
and drivers in a couple of device type groupings, as well as a USB device in
Other Devices with a yellow question mark which I'll look at later tonite.

In Sound, Video and Game Controllers there are many other Devices now
listed, however they are all shown with a light grey bitmap in front, and on
looking at their properties they are all in location 0 with a status of "this
hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)"
A couple of examples are Closed Caption Decoder, Streaming Clock Proxy
amongst the list.

The Video Codecs that I know are installed and have been using are still not
shown.
I again verified that they are installed correctly using tools such as
GSpot, Sherlock and MMCompView which list all codecs on the laptop.

Can you suggest any other course of action?

Again, many thanks
