Same restarting problem in Windows Mail

T

Terry

I am still having the problem opening attachments. Sometimes they will open
properly and sometimes it closes the Windows Mail program, or restarts on
it's own. I have tried the suggestion of turning off the security program's
email scanning feature, both incoming and outgoing. This has changed
nothing. Still new emails containing attachments cause a reboot of the
Windows Mail program. I think there is something more wrong with the Vista
email program now, as for almost 2 years it has worked perfectly until
October 8th, 2008, using the same security program. I have installed the
Vista SP1 about 2 weeks ago with no problems until now. The only update
that ran previously to this problem showing up, was a Windows Defender
update on 10/07/08. After looking at the Event Logs, there seems to have
been something that happened on the morning of 10/08/08 that had an effect
on the Windows Mail program, and I probably need expert help in sorting out
this. How do I go about getting this type of help, or showing these
messages concerning the mail program that might explain the cause, and
possibly a cure. Can the Windows Mail program be uninstalled and
reinstalled?

I am having the EXACT same problem and I also turned off the email scanning
feature on my Norton antivirus. Is thsi another new "Feature" on Vista mail?

Can anyone help?

Norton antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
The only way you can prove or disprove that Norton is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:

Another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to the adverse effects of overly intrusive antivirus products:

In any case you must disable any antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:

I have disabled all email scanning programs and still the same problem.
It is unacceptable that the two programs should work for over a year
with no problems, and then all of a sudden, one update causes this
problem, and it is all said to be each other's fault. Both pass the
buck, instead of fixing the problem. What does Micorsoft want us
to do, go with another program, that they designate shall have no
problems. I already use Windows Live Mail (Hotmail). I have never
used it as my personal email program, because the storage is in
their own server. I like privacy, as do many others in the world. Does
this mean nothing will be done to fix this? No wonder so many are
choosing another operating system.

Please don't confuse the current Windows Live Hotmail with Windows Live Mail.
Confusion is understandable because at one time those two programs were
named Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Mail Desktop, respectively.
The current Windows Live Mail is not primarily web-based, although it will
accommodate Hotmail accounts as well as any POP and IMAP accounts.
Microsoft disbanded its Windows Mail team in the fall of 2006, and all
development effort was shifted over to Windows Live Mail. There will be
no fixes or improvements forthcoming for Windows Mail. Microsoft has
designated Windows Live Mail as the official replacement.

Thank you for explaining that in more depth. I feel like Microsoft has left
us in the lurch on this. We purchase this product with the mail program as
part of the package, and they change it and drop us without so much as
a warning. Will I have to purchase the Windows Live Mail now? Is
there no upgrade option for original buyers of an obsolete program that
has been replaced before it was purchased? I hate being the office joke,
having the developers laughing at us, the poor ignorant users. If you are
in contact with anyone at Microsoft, please relay my displeasure with the
company's policies.

How do you think we feel, VOLUNTEERS that are supporting users of WM?

Simply download WLM and install it, it should import all your mail and
accounts.

Thanks for all the information. I did try the Windows Live Mail, which
was lacking the Edit, Source, Preview option in forwarding emails, but
it also had the same problem with the attachments. I finally uninstalled
WLM and went back to the old Windows Mail. Since it was doing the
same thing, I decided to check again when the problem started, and
evidently there was a problem during an Automatic Live Update with
Norton Internet Security, so I uninstalled it with the Norton removal tool,
reinstalled it and the problem is gone. I should have listened to the first
recommendation, so it wouldn't have taken so long to get this fixed.

Glad to see you got it resolved for now.
Just be aware that the next Norton update may mess up your
Windows Mail again.

I agree that the lack of Edit/Source/Preview in WLM is a serious
omission for those who like to tweak their HTML code.
