Windows Mail keeps restarting

I have never had a problem, in the year and a half of having Vista Home
Premium. Today it started having an unknown problem, which freezes up the
mail program and restarts, losing anything I might have been working on at
the time. It does it at different times, and during different operations in
the mail program. I have had it reboot the email even when just having it
restart. This is the first time I recollect it ever doing this restart
business, so I don't know what is causing it. I have a Gateway desktop with
all newest updates installed 2 weeks ago, including Vista SP1. I have DSL
access. All spyware and antivirus programs up to date also.

Is your AntiVirus application scanning your email? Windows Mail is
particularly sensitive to email scanners, most of them cause all sorts of
problems for it. You will need to uninstall the email scanning components
from your AntiVirus package. I should add that Vista SP1 is not compatible
with email scanners, running them can also cause operating system
difficulties in addition to email problems. You do not need email scanning,
it is a redundant operation that adds ZERO additional protection while
causing numerous problems for no good reason. Your computer is fully
protected without it, provided you keep the resident file system scanner up
to date.

I haven't changed anything, and the scanning feature of the antivirus
program has always been engaged. This just started today, and Vista SP1 has
been installed for about 2 weeks. With the numerous emails I get daily,
today is the first time it has done this. It seems that sometimes, when I
open an attachment it does it, and the next time, on the same attachment, it
works perfectly. Also the antivirus program hasn't been updated as far as I
know, in a while.

Terry, I have the same problem and it started when I accidently clicked "yes"
to
Windows request to compress my mail files. I had been getting that request
for
awhile but always clicked "no" . Mine always happens when I try to open an
attachment but it, like yours, doesn't happen every time. How do you
uncompress
the mail files?

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular
resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee,Trend and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail
and Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of
Trend's anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.
