My Microsoft Word gets a pop-up after 10 minutes that reads " Microsoft
visual C++ runtime library"
Runtime Error !
Program : C:\program files\microsoft office \ 10 \ win word . Exe

How do I fix this ?

Thankyou , Coach

A "runtime" error means that there is an error in a macro or add-in that is
attempting to run. Typically these macros are created by a third-party and
are not part of the Word installation. (They could also be caused by a
malfunctioning macro virus as well)

Many third-party applications will create an add-in and place it in the
Office\Startup folder or use a COM add-in (DLL) to integrate their software
with Word. Another common add-in, the "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for
Word" can only be found in your Add/Remove programs list.

Aside from the Works Suite Add-in, to determine if you have any add-ins you
can check for them using the following:

Go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global templates
or add-ins listed. If you find any then chances are they are located in
your Office\Startup folder or Word\Startup folder.

The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder will be located
in the installation path for Office.

If you find more than one add-in move them one at a time until you
determine which one is causing the problem.

As of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins, those that are added in via the
Registry rather than the Startup folders. To check for COM add-ins add the
"COM Add-In" command to your toolbar.

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article:

Hi,
I have a similar problem. I cannot open Microsoft Word and ever time
try, I get the error message

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime error

Program : C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office \Office\ Win Word . Exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in a
unusual way. Please contact the applications's support team for mor
details.

I think I am probably the cause of the problem as (for the first time
I made a macro toolbat for correcting student's work. The macro seeme
to work fine then suddenly the error message .....
I've tried renaming the normal.doc and putting the macro toolbar in th
trash but neither of these things work. I've thought of reinstallin
word but it came installed on my computer (ME OS)and I can't locat
it's set up on the computer.

I don't have the works suite add in and have taken out the template
that I can see.

I'd really appreciate any further advice as this glitch is reall
driving me to despair. Most of the advice on the Internet seems to b
to fix things from within word but I can't get in!

Cheers,

If you've ruled out global templates and add-ins in your Startup
folders, which in this case a Visual C++ error typically indicates the
problem lies in a COM Add-in anyway, take a look at this article for
troubleshooting methods you can use to find the COM Add-in:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555220

If you find it resolves the problem then please let us know which
method worked and the name of the add-in causing the error. :-)

Graham & Beth,
Thanks for the links and advice - much appreciated. I was able t
follow all of the very clear advice but I'm afraid to no avail
Although I can open word using the run path.

I've renamed the normal.dot file, renamed and taken a template out o
the startup folder and deleted the data files from the word 8 and
registry.
Still no joy - I've got a feeling that it is my macro that is causin
the problem.
I followed Beth's link which seems to lead to the answer but I thin
each of the options there requires Word to be open.
Does anyone know of a way to disable/trash a macro command when Wor
cannot open? Any other advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Stu

Hi Stu,

I doubt a macro you created is causing the error since it is a C++
error. Macros are created using VBA.

If you start Word using the /a switch and modify your macro security
these settings should be preserved the next time you start Word. (I'll
need to modify my article to indicate this - thanks for the feedback
:-) )

1. On the Tools menu, point at Macro, and click Security in the
submenu
2. Select the Security Level tab
3. Set macro security to Medium
4. Select the Trusted Publishers tab
5. Deselect Trust all installed add-ins and templates
6. Select each Trusted Source and click Remove
7. Exit and restart Word (without the /a switch)
8. When prompted to Enable/Disable macros note file name and location
of the add-in displayed in the message box

I would enable the macros for each add-in. Chances are Word will crash
as the add-in attempts to load and you should be able to find it.

Also, I've received confirmation that the "Microsoft Works Suite
Add-in for Word" has reared its ugly head again and is causing Visual
C++ runtime errors so check Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel
and if you find the add-in uninstall it.
