Roaming profile over VPN

I have W2k pro clients and a Windows 2003 Active
Directory.

I have some users that log in to AD thru ADSL over a VPN
connection. Today everything works fine but some users
want to have roaming profile and if I set a roaming
profile on a user account it taks 4-5 minutes before the
desktop shows up.

The profiles are only 400-500 kb in size and it shouldn't
take that time.

This happens on every account that connects thru VPN with
a roaming profile.

Whats wrong? Where can I start troubleshooting?

Hi,

How about the speed of the VPN connection from the client and the VPN
server?

You can make the test. Connect to the VPN server with a computer use the
local profile. Map a driver from the server which contains the roaming
profile. Try to copy a folder with some files which size is about 500KB to
the mapped driver. Let's caculate the transfer speed.

If the speed is about 100Kb/s or lower, I think the behavior is normal.

The client will continue try to access the roaming profile saved on the
server.

And, the VPN is the security tunnel. The data come through it will be
encrypted and decrypted. This also will bring the bandwidth cost.

So, it's not suggested to use the roaming profile when the connection speed
is low.
