W2K Server + XP Client + Roaming Profiles

W2K Server + W2K Client with Roaming profiles is fine & working. Adding a new
client with WinXP PRo causes problems. When logging into the domain, due to
some security issues, it is not able toload the profile and creates a temp
profile. However, the script that maps all the drives etc is running fine.
All the access rights to roaming profile directory is fine and as standard as
it all works fine for the same user to use a W2K client system!!! If we put
the user as part of Adminstrator group on the server then it works but is not
ideal as user can mess up the server !! What I can not understand is why W2K
client works but Win XP PRO client complains about security rights ? This is
a clean XP setup with Off2003 as applications software only.

Can anyone help please ??

Thanks

I think what is happening is that the computer is loading the operating
system before the network configuration is complete. So, the server can
not be contacted to get the profile, and just creates a temporary one. I
think that security settings prevent this happening with an
administrator account, and forces it to wait for the network settings
to install. There is a way of forcing the computer to wait for the
network to be available (and all other settings). I think it might be
in the services or local security settings.

You may want to ping the server and see if it is giving you the right
IP address from the client. If not, a pointer might be out in DNS.

Thank you for your reply.

I did consider the options you suggested but is not the case.
I waited few minutes before logging in to ensure all internal process is
complete before loggin on (as per advise frrom one technet document).

If I create a new uer and then allow it be roaming then it is fine.
It seems that there a compatibility issue betwwen profiles created by W2K
and Win-XP.

What confuses the issue is that when the user is set as part of admin group
on the server, it works fine irrespective of where the original use profiles
was created from !!

Can anyone thow more light please !

Thank you
