"RIS"ing Laptops across subnets

G

Greg Turnbull

Hi,

We are trying to RIS our laptops across subnets and and
this stage we cannot do so. Rising Laptops on the same
subnet as the domain controller and RIS server works fine
for both desktops and laptops.

Additionally we can RIS desktops across subnets without
problems.

Laptops are our only problem.

We have tried different versions of laptops including
acers, toshibas and compaqs however with out success.

As I said earlier we have no problem RISing them on the
same subnet.

Thanks

Greg,

Are you using a single port replicator or docking station to test the
laptop functionality on the subnet? Does this happen on more than one
subnet in the environment?

Hmmm. This one sounds weird. The fact that it is only laptops and only on
a certain subnet seems weird.

Mike's suggestion was better than anything I've come up with to explain
what's going on.

Could it be related to DHCP-somehow? Do the laptops consistently get the
right IP address when being moved between subnets? What is your DHCP setup,
by the way? Any RFC1542 bootp relays involved? Single DHCP server, or
multiple?

Are you getting the following PXE error?

"PXE-E55 proxy dhcp service did not reply to request on port 4011"

If so, you will need an IP helper table for your Routers for ports 4011,
67, 68, 69 (basically all ports that use DHCP and the 4011 which is what
the binlsvc uses to connect to the DC).

The relay and IP helper need is described in:

Intel publishes a list of PXE errors, please add the DHCP relay agent and
IP helper to your router, if this does not resolve the issue, please
reference the following PXE list to let us know your specific PXE error:
