"RIS"ing Laptops across subnets.

Hi,

We are trying to RIS our laptops across subnets and and
this stage we cannot do so. Rising Laptops on the same
subnet as the domain controller and RIS server works fine
for both desktops and laptops.

Additionally we can RIS desktops across subnets without
problems.

Laptops are our only problem.

We have tried different versions of laptops including
acers, toshibas and compaqs however with out success.

As I said earlier we have no problem RISing them on the
same subnet.

Has anyone found a away around this.

Thanks
Greg Turnbull

Greg,

Haven't run into that one. Usually, the problem is NO
systems can be RIS'd outside the subnet of the RIS server,
which was the problem I was having.

The fix was to make a change to the IP HELPER ADDRESS line
on the switch. Rather than have the single static IP
address of your RIS server, change the last octet to "255".

For example, a RIS server with 172.30.121.39 would have an
entry in a Cisco switch something like "IP HELPER-ADDRESS
= 172.30.121.39". We changed it to say 172.30.121.255
instead and that worked. Took 4 hours with MS Premier
Support to nail that one. I can now RIS systems on a
different subnet from the RIS server and from the DHCP
server.

One caveat: this will firestorm that subnet by
broadcasting to ALL servers on the RIS subnet. If you
find this works by using 255, you might want to move your
RIS server to an isolated subnet.
