RIS images not working?

C

I completely uninstalled RIS and deleted the
\RemoteInstall directory, rebooted then installed RIS
again and ran RISETUP. I used a W2kPro image and slipped
SP4 into it. Now that I've got that working I tried
restoring the images I had backed up on BackupExec.
Now I get the error message:
"The BINL service cannot locate a flat image with a
version that matches the version of the RIPREP image."

I know for a fact that all the images I had backed up had
SP4 on them. How can I get these images to work?
Carlton.

Forgot to mention earlier that I checked both versions of
NTOSKRNL.EXE and on the slipped image I show version
5.0.2195.6717, file size 1679kb date of 6/19/2003.
When I checked the NTOSKRNL.EXE on the restored image
there wasn't a tab for version, but the file size and date
are the same.

Now - you made a flat image of i386 from the Win2k and slipstreamed that,
and then made the RIS image... you didn't slipstream a RIS-created flat.
Just checking.

This problem can happen if the SIS Groveler data gets messed up, you use
different media to create the images, or the SP level is different between
the cd-based image and the RIPPREP images.

Make sure you've followed these steps:

Scott,
The KB232115 looks like what I need. One more question.
When I restore the Images should I also restore the "SIS
Commmon Store" from backup as well?
If so do I need to install RIS before I do that?
thanks,
Carlton.

No, don't restore the SIS store. I think that would corrupt data. Also
check the permissions on the restored images to make sure they aren't broken
and filled with broken guids.

Scott,
I restored the \RemoteInstall directory from tape after
deleting the existing one, then installed RIS and ran
risetup -check ; it then asked for an image so I loaded an
existing w2kPro with SP4 on it. After I loaded it I
deleted that image directory (per the kb232115 method 2)
Now, when I try to do a PXE boot on a client it gets to
the F12 prompt, but after I hit F12 the cursor just blinks
at the top left.
Is this a lost cause?
Carlton.

Wow, this is getting messy.

The client screen does nothing on F12? No attempt to get an DHCP address or
anything?

Is the RIS server authorized? Can other clients get DHCP?

I will inquire for you on the best way to proceed.

Scott,
I'm able to get an IP from the DHCP server and then it
finds the RIS server and prompts me for F12, but once I
hit F12 it cursor pops up to the top left and flashes.
That's it.
I'm almost at a point where it'll be easier to just
recreate the images I had on there.
Carlton.

OK, Carlton I have seen this before. In my case, one file became corrupt...
I'm going from memory here Carlton, I renamed the files from
\\RISServerName\REMINST\OSChooser\i386 to *.OLD and reinstalled RIS. I
believe it was the NTLDR that was corrupt.
