RIS (BINL service) Authorisation Error

P

Paul Beyer

Hi,

I have a 2k mixed mode domain with 2x NT4 boxes providing
nothing other than account validation while the two 2000
DC's are the ones providing DNS WINS DHCP blah blah etc
etc. I have a 2K member server which has RIS installed on
it and I've got the problem of the server reporting this
in the event log.
"The BINL service has been notified by the DHCP service
that it is not authorized to run on this server. BINL will
not respond to client requests."
KB article 221484 describes a resolution to this problem
but doesn't actually tell you how to get your RIS server
authorised in DHCP or AD or wherever it needs authorising.
I've restarted services - added two DHCP scope options for
Bootclient file and Bootfile server but this doesn't
change the fact the server is still not authorised to run.

Please Please help , this is REALLY frustrating!

Mank thanks in advance.

Paul.

you only need to authorize your RIS server in DHCP snap-in. Dont need to authorize anywhere else. If your ris server resides on your DHCP server this step is not necessary.

1. Load DHCP snap-in by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Administrative Tools, and then clicking DHCP.
2. On the Action menu, click Browse Authorized Servers.
3. Add your RIS by clicking Add.
4. When you are finished, close the DHCP snap-in.

Hope this helps you;)

DHCP must be on the RIS server if the RIS server is multihomed.
Additionally all NICs must have an active scope.
