Right click problem

If this is not the appropriate newsgroup please advise.

Using WINXP and WINXP Office.

Problem: When I right click on any FOLDER a menu pops up immediately but
when I right click on any FILE the menu does not appear and the hour glass
grinds away. Sometimes after a minute or two the arrow curser returns but
the menu does not appear. Usually I go to task master and "end task."
I have uninstalled the AVG antivirus software, eliminated all but essential
items from the startup, deleted all temp files, ran chkdsk, defrag, shutdown
the firewall, and did a Microsoft Word repair. Tried a search of this
newsgroup using a variety of subject items with no success. This problem is
on my wife's computer and the pressure is starting to mount!

Ronnie,
Sorry to say that was not the solution. Another facet of the problem - I can
left click on the My Documents file and then when I select "file" the hour
glass starts grinding away again. I thought that since I could not right
click and delete the file that I could left click and then go to file to
delete. Wrong!!

I am still beating the bushes trying to find a solution to this problem. I
came up in SAFE mode and the problem was gone. Went into MSCONFIG and using
selective mode turned off all programs and services and problem gone again.
Turned on system.ini - problem still gone
turned on process - problem still gone
loaded services - problem is back. Thought I had isolated problem to
"windows audio" but when I returned to normal startup thru MSCONFIG problem
returned. Started over again and got to point where turning the DHCP off and
on appeared to work. Unfortunately, it also kills the network. What next -
XP repair?
