right-click doesn't work...

I have Windows ME. I had IE6 SP1 installed but it crashed
at apparently random times. The error reporting tool
offered no suggested fixes. Since I had no idea how to fix
this, I uninstalled IE6 SP1 which reverted to IE5.5. Major
problem now is that right-click doesn't work on any web
page. I also think that some javascript commands aren't
working. If I reinstall IE6 SP1, right-click still doesn't
work and it crashes if I click on an input field. The
error reporting tool sends me to windows update but the
scan for updates doesn't scan. If I try to install the
critical patches manually, I get an error that says that
IE6 SP1 must be installed. If I click on Help/About
Internet Explorer, I get Error: 96. Only solution is to go
back to IE5.5 and not have right-click. Any ideas how to
fix this?

Nothing in the troubleshoot list even comes close to
matching my problem. I'm not getting any errors. In IE5.5
(which I'm forced to use for now), right-click does
nothing no matter what web page is showing. Right-click
works everywhere else in Windows ME, including the toolbar
of IE. If I reinstall IE6, almost every web page causes
IE6 to crash. If the web page doesn't cause a crash but
has an input field that I want to use, IE6 will crash if I
click inside the input field. The Error Reporting Tool
(with IE6 installed), directs me to Windows Update to
install some critical updates. However, when I click
on "Scan for updates" in Windows Update, something
disappears off the menu on left side of the Windows Update
page and the scan doesn't happen. Again, nothing in
troubleshoot matches this problem. I've even gone so far
as to do selective startup in Windows before installing
IE6. I'm trying to decide whether it's better to use
system restore, reinstall Windows ME, upgrade to Windows
XP, use a non-MS browser, or switch to Linux. Obviously,
something's wrong with my installation of IE5.5 and I
cannot upgrade to IE6.
