IE6 Strange Crash

B

Bik

I just upgraded to IE6 & all critical updates from IE5.5 after a new clean
install of win 98se on my old 200mhz pentium system. (No problems on my new
XP system)

IE6 starts ok but with in a few seconds will crash on many websites.
www.msn.com will crash within a few seconds.

It's a strange crash because I have never encountered anything like this.
The screen goes blank yet the computer continues to run for a minute then
does what seems to be a warm reboot & comes up with the same dark screen.
When I do a cold boot everything is back to normal.

Just installed Opera browser to test & it does not crash, so problem is
confined to IE6. Did several things such as unchecking MS JIT compiler,
using the repair function in IE6 add/remove, going back to IE5.5 &
reinstalling IE6 without the critical updates, etc. - all with no results.
Haven't tried to get the updates again as it will probably crash before the
long windows update scan.

There are no conflicts or any other problems with this computer other than
running IE6. Note: Outlook Express runs ok.

Since this computer will only be used online as a backup as I have an XP
system, could go back to IE5.5 but would l like to solve this.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks, Bik

Might need to clarify: I upgraded to IE6 and all the IE6 & other critical
upgrades in one windows upgrade session. They installed one after the other
I think there were about 14 of them. (No IE5.5 upgrades)

I think my problem might be need for a new video driver for win 98se.
Windows picked the best driver for me from it's built in database but I
might need to upgrade. It is an old 1997 vintage stb velocity 3d 4mb card

First try reducing the hardware acceleration of your
video card. Then try rebooting in safe mode and see
if it still crashes, if not then a bad driver is to blame,
probably the video card's.

Thanks,

Reduced the hardware acceleration to none - no crashes. Moved it up one
notch to minimum acceleration & still no crashes.

Haven't tried the next to the max setting but do I really need any more than
the minimum acceleration? I don't use this computer for games & it is only
my extra backup computer.

I tried to update the driver for the video card. The driver I found for the
exact stb velocity 3d card I had was older & worked terrible. Will stay with
the one win98se found in it's database for the S3 Virge-VX PCI chipset. But,
will look for an even newer S3 Virge driver.

Have you tried adjusting the brightness? That "warm boot" might be
a "blue screen dump" aka BSOD. Check your Event Viewer
(e.g. Run... eventvwr) System log to see if there are any entries
corresponding to the crash.

This sounds more like a problem with your OS or hardware.
You would probably get better help from other newsgroups
which specialize in those topics.

Good luck

Well, since you rarely use that computer, it doesn't make
much difference for you what video hardware acceleration
you're on there.

If somehow it does:

1) Check to see if you're really running IE6, and it's fully
updated. You might be running IE5. There could also be
a video related setting in the advanced tab of internet options
that may contribute to this problem, such as smarth dithering
or page transitions.

2) Try the latest driver available, as well as the latest
video card bios. Just make sure you can go back to the
current ones, because there is always the potential that
the new ones might make things worst.

3) If still nothing resolves it at full acceleration,
try the notch just below full.

BTW, the Virge chipset is a very old one, and it
doesn't do much acceleration anyway, it's practically
useless for most games.

Can't get eventvwr to Start - Run. Is this available on win98se?

I never had this feature with win95, have viewed it on XP but am not
familiar with win98se as I just did the clean install.

Thanks, Bik

Am running IE6 & have the updates. Unchecked the advanced tab items that you
mentioned as well as other such as web page animations but this did not cure
crashes.

Am still looking for new drivers but the one in the win98se database seems
to be latest.

try the notch just below full.

Notch below Full still has the crash. Worked for a while on various websites
but I tried the one that always crashes www.msn.com This will ALWAYS cause
the crash with about 5 seconds.

No site crashes with the setting one notch above no acceleration.

How things have advanced - back in 1997 The STB Velocity 3d 4mb was state of
the art :)

My 1 1/2 yr old XP system has a 64mb card which is now outdated by the 128mb
cards.
