restarting 'number-of-page' page numbering

My Word Document has a cover page which is in its own section. I have the
page numbering starting in the second section but when I put page X of Y it
is counting the cover page and I dont want it to.

I know how to restart the page numbering for X but I need some help in
figuring out how to change the page numbering for Y.

I have tried to read the other messages concering Page numbering for X and Y
but the messages wont open and I get a popup telling me there are "errors on
the page".

Right-click the Y number and select Toggle Field Code. You'll see
this:
{NUMPAGES}
Edit that to say
{SECTIONPAGES}
Right-click it again and click Update Field.

The difference is that the NumPages field counts all the pages in the
document, while the SectionPages field counts only the ones in the
current section.

This won't work right if you have more than two sections, because the
field can't continue the count from a previous section.
