Resource Error

We have a Laserjet 5simx on our network and when I try to
access the printer preferences from properties box an
error comes up saying that the printer operation cannot
continue due to lack of resources. I've tried restarting
the printer service and turning the printer off for 15
seconds to flush the memory but that didn't work. What
could be causing this?

When Windows complains about a "lack of resources," it is not talking about
the printer. It is complaining about not enough Window resources.

Spyware can gobble up your resources. Try running Ad-Aware
(http://www.lavasoftusa.com) or SpyBot Search & Destroy
(http://www.safer-networking.org). They're free and do a pretty good job.

If you are short on memory, both physical and virtual, it can also trigger a
lack of resources complaint from Windows. Run Task Manager and take a peek
at the memory consumption.

Sometimes a poorly-written application will inadvertently consume resources
by way of a memory leak or failure to unload. If you are familiar with what
processes should be running on an idle system, you might be able to identify
the renegade using Task Manager.

Don't overlook the possibility your installed HP LaserJet printer driver
might have become corrupt. Uninstall/reinstall.

And then there's the possibility you have a general mess in your system.
Open a Command Prompt and enter the command SFC /SCANNOW to run the System
File Checker (as it was known under Win98). It will prompt for your Win2K CD
in order to recover files it found to be corrupt. After running SFC, reapply
Win2K SP4. (You can never apply a Service Pack too many times.)

As for what else might be causing Windows to complain about a lack of
resources:

* Moon dust
* Solar flairs
* Pixie farts
* Planetary misalignment
* You name it!
