resolution is stuck in 640/480

I have windows 2000 professional and my brother did a windows update on my
computer on 7/11/05. The next moring I went to get on the computer and the
resolution was set at 640/480, when trying to change it the computer restarts
in the same setting 640/480. We have tried several things: changing
resolution, restoring, updating again, and virus scan. Nothing is helping
and I am stuck in this resolution. Does anyone have any suggestions on what
to try?
