Ok after reading the messages about this here ! can only come to these
conclusuions

1) its another xp bug (that btw sp2 does not fix actually it starts it
2) because the isue has been within the last 2 month at most means its
caused by one of the updates in the same period of time (and is included
with the sp2 beta aswell )
3) no save settings tweak/fix/script is able to fix this issue (i've used
everyone avail with no results)
4) the main admin user account is unaffected by this bug (which might mean
its something that has changed with in the default group policy permisions
maybe ?)
5) microsoft has no clue yet what it is either or wouldn't there be a KB on
this with so many having this problem(btw do they ever follow these things
here or do they only have mvp's here which btw do much better work than
microsoft has)

on the matter of mvp's why would a company like microsoft not hire them
instead of abuse their generosity to help us in their free spare time is
bill gates that poor LOL

You should be posting SP2 beta comments in the appropriate newsgroup
setup for SP2 beta testing. If you are a legitimate beat tester, you are
in violation of your beta tester agreement by commenting on a beta project
in a public newsgroup.

If it was a sp2 beta issue I would say you are right Carey but it is not
I only stated sp2 has the same bug nothing more

this is a bug in current sp1 with all updates aplied the reference to sp2
only claims that it has the same update in it that causes this in the first
place at least this is what I meant by it

I didn't catch the start of this thread but if you're concerned about
desktop icons reverting to their default icon names, then the culprit
isn't Windows but rather the newer nVidia drivers you've installed.
If you disable the nVidia Display Driver Service*, they will not
revert to their default names anymore and there doesn't appear to be
any detrimental effect.

*(Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services > disable)

Michael you are Right about this that is the problem indeed and it is the
solution to this problem :)

you are the man LoL

guess I'm off to Nvidia to confirm this to them also
btw setting the service to manual solves this problem also

Thank you and please post this as a posible fix because you deserve the
credit for this fix and I ve seen so many people here and elsewhere with
this problem here and they are all like me pulling out their hair as well.
funny if something goes wrong with xp MS always is the first we think is the
cause but then again if they would for once sell us a OS we didn't have to
pay to beta test for them we might think better about them

I give 5 out of 5 star rating for this solution hehe

Just like Michael Cecil just did :)

MS only writes a KB a year or so after someone here solves it.

If you do not need 'terminal services', you can switch it
off and the icon name reset problem is gone. Just check
the the depencies in services.msc. (fast user switching &
remote desktop if I remember correctly)

Sure it's not your video card drivers doing it as it is for some (nvidia)
