res://shdoclc/syntax.htm#http://

I am really protected well with firewall, virus scan, spamkiller-type
software to safely read my mail at the server. Windws XP 2002 SP2 with all
updates.

This morning I typed in a friend's URL and got a "page cannot be displayed"
message. The rest of the message includes, "Open the
res://shdoclc/syntax.htm#http:// home page, and then look for links to the
information you want."

The URL looks like it really should be an email address:
[email protected]

I looked up the res://shdoclc/syntax phrase and now I'm rattled.
I just made a setting to "show hidden files and folders" and have UNchecked
Hide protected operting system files so I could search for the shdoclc.dll.
It shows up in C:\Windows\System 32.

Can I assume my friend botched the supposed www URL - email address? or?

Yes, I think so.

This format is unsupported for the recent builds / or if you installed this
security update:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834489

A security update is available that removes support for handling user names
and passwords in HTTP and HTTP with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or HTTPS URLs
in Microsoft Internet Explorer. The following URL syntax is no longer
supported in Internet Explorer or in Windows Explorer after you install the
MS04-004 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (832894):

http(s)://username:password@server/resource.ext

Really - thank you! Somehow I never knew ISPs required users to build a URL
like that. Where have I been? Right under security, apparently. DSG
