Replacing NT4 print server with 2003

Andrew Davidson

I am in the process of replacing an old NT4 file/print server with new
hardware and windows 2003 standard. I would like a bit of advice.

1. Would it be best to do a restore of the files and shares onto the new
server and then rename the new server the old server's name. (For offline
file setting that already exist on clients.)

2. I have installed the printers on the new 2003 Server machine. I did name
the printers the same names. All clients are 2000 pro or XP pro so I will
not need the older drivers that reside on the NT 4 server. If I rename the
new server the same name as the NT 4 server, will the existing connections
to network printers on the clients be problematic? Will my users need to
delete the old printers and reinstall?

Thank you in advance for your help.

If you name the server the same, make sure you use the
same IP Address also (for name resolution purposes). If
you move the name and IP when you migrate printers and
fileshares, you shouldn't have any problems with your
clients.
